Birds & Building Materials

Filed under Bird Watcher Kit, Fairy Garden, Miniatures, Rhonda Secrist Thomas, Shannon Cooper

Yes! Birds AND Miniature Building Materials! It’s a bit of an odd combo, but stay with me.

I’ve been collecting mini fences and windows (and… you’ll see shortly) in both 1:12 and 1:24 scale… none have yet jelled into an art project but they’re in stock and no time like the present!

Then (in honor of spring and Easter) I picked a trio of bird-themed artworks by TWO Design Team Members using a birdcage and a birdhouse, a bit farther below. And I’ve put everything in ALL THREE supply lists on sale!

Birdy Artwork x3!

Wow, these first 2 projects show quite a contrast of possible styles using the same birdhouse as the base!

Starting with The Dark Shrine by Shannon Cooper. Here’s a bit from Shannon’s blog post as intro:

The Mini Birdhouse Shrine fit nicely on top of two Window Boxes with Gothic Facades with room left over for a perimeter of black and red roses.

Most everything was painted black, but a collage sheet image was glued to the back to lighten things up a bit.

Aside: I started laughing when I read that bit, as the collage sheet image that is “lightening things up” shows a woman with her head in her hands. weeping over a fallen knight.

Great job, Shannon! So clever to use 2 of the window boxes as a shrine base! Read more and see more photos (with a tutorial!) on Shannon’s blog post or view the supply list.

NEXT UP: A whole different look and feel from by Rhonda Thomas!

Time for a little escape to my back woods. I noticed a little girl there the other day, having a wonderful enchanted dream with some robins in a Mini Birdhouse Shrine. The moss has grown up all around it, making it very cozy. Warm on a rainy day and cool on a hot day. That is why I love my woods so much. A quiet escape, despite the thousands of 17 year cicadas that are taking over soon.

Using the Spring Green Lichen Mix made it super easy to cover all of the bird house edges and also helped to make an extra cozy nest. It can be found on the Alpha Stamps web site as well as other “ground” coverings like the Green Turf Grass I used and more. The extra bonus is that the moss growing at the bottom of my tree is almost a perfect match with the others that I used.

FINALLY, see the photos at left and below for The State of Being Free (also by Rhonda)!

Rhonda’s album is so pretty! I love her color combo with the (mainly) blue papers from the paper set. Here’s a bit from her blog post:

One of my favorite color combinations is deep purple, green and blue. When I saw these Summertime In Blue Papers, I knew I had to create with them and that whatever I made was going to turn out beautifully.

I can always find a use for old dictionary pages. We have a huge used book store in my town and I found my first vintage French Dictionary there. A really old and beautifully illustrated one. The older and dingier the pages, the better. They are especially useful when you are creating with a certain theme in mind, like fairies, butterflies, and freedom.

Freedom was the main word that came to my mind as I kept seeing all of these wonderful, free fairies. The thought of being a free fairy, flying about in the depths of nature sounds so heavenly to me.

The first thing that I did for this project was to put my Birdcage Shaped Album through my sticker machine. Then, I covered each page in one of the Summertime in Blue Papers. This gave me my “canvas” to create on.

I love how this project turned out! You can see more photos and read more on her blog post. Plus here’s Rhonda’s supply list (and remember that all these supplies are in today’s sale collection)!
