Reindeer Do Fly!

Filed under Art Projects, Caroline Ouzts-Hay, Giveaways, Newsletters, Santa Sleigh Kit

Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply list items from Caroline’s project that are still available on the new site.

I know! It’s a week till Christmas! (Or to Christmas Eve, to be exact.) So, just a couple quick announcements before Miz Bella (Kim Ayers) introduces a great project from that talented Caroline Ouzts-Hay.

First: a reminder that the 33% Off Sale on Christmas Collage Sheets has been extended through Christmas Eve! (and there’s still time to download some digital images or collage sheets for making last-minute gifts). AND I just added the Angels and Saints Collage Sheets to the sale, too!

Next: yes, it’s that time again: While the Cat’s Away… More info

This month at Alpha Stamps it’s all about the sleigh, and Design Team Member Caroline Ouzts-Hay has created one with a flying twist. Caroline started out using the Santa Sleigh Kit and Add-On Kit for her project.

“To achieve the rich red on the sleigh I started by stamping the Fancy Flourish Clear Stamp, painted over that with red paint, grunged up the edges with some black ink and then painted over it all with Crackle Distress Paint.

“The gifts are 7/8″ Wooden Cube Blocks wrapped in Christmastime paper. Oh my, this paper is stunning; I prefer the Christmastime 6×6 Paper Pad because the pattern/designs are smaller. Wrapping ribbon around them would have hidden the pretty patterns so I used gold Mini Rosette Dresden Borders to act like ribbon and then tied a bit of seam binding to make the bow on top.

“I made a bunch of wreaths for this project, and I mean a bunch. Tim Holtz’s Pine Twine came in very handy. To accent the wreaths on the front and back of the sleigh I added Small Pine Cones, ribbon from the Advent Calendar Tags Ribbon Set, and a few of the Red Glittered Holly Berries.”

Now, most people would have stopped with having made the festooned sleigh and pretty presents. However, Caroline decided to put the sleigh up on a block, and then used house facades (including a nice seasonal turn for the Black Chipboard Windows Set for Haunted Houses) and the new 4 Inch Standing Chipboard Trees on the side of it so that it appears the reindeer are flying overhead (and to hide the secret mechanical works inside that black box… more info on that is below).

Let’s pause and pay homage to Rudolph. You knew I was going to light something up! Rudolph is a Chipboard Reindeer covered in the scrumptious Christmastime paper with a wreath around his dainty neck. Gold Metallic Mini Braid is used for a harness and his nose (and this is ironic), is made from one of the LED Red Demon Eyes.”

Reindeer Do Fly Supply List

After all that, Caroline still wasn’t satisfied; so she became the mad-crafter scientist and even got her husband in on her madness to help her create a mechanism that makes the reindeer fly! You can visit Caroline’s blog to see how she created the flying mechanism, and to see the reindeer in flight; along with more photos.

Hooray for the Reindeer Do Fly Giveaway!

Hey, who won the Alice in Wonderland Sleigh Giveaway? That would be Alice Z!

And she replied to my query “Flamingo reindeer? Would you make some to pull your sleigh? Maybe some other chimeric mash-up?”

As a huge Alice in Wonderland fan and collector it was interesting to see something fabulous and related to a different holiday than Easter (All those rabbits, you know). I’d like to thank for teaching me the word “chimeric”. But I must admit, I’d rather wee something pulling the sleigh that would look cute with a red nose… perhaps a dormouse or, dare I say it, rabbit head on the reindeer body?

Caroline’s projects are always breath-taking but this is spectacular. I’d love to try her projects and reindeer are one of my favorite holiday ornaments. I’m almost done with making presents but have a lot of cards yet to do. But since we Armenians celebrate Christmas on Jan. 6, I have some wiggle-room.

  6. Karen says:

I love this giveaway and OF COURSE I am still making presents. You know that nothing would get done if it weren’t for the “last minute.”

  7. Barb Striethorst says:

As always, present making/buying is not complete! Wish I had your store next door!!

  8. Ann Cruzen says:

Oh, yes. I have one more gift project to go and was sort of saving it ( to savor ) towards the end. Our new little granddaughter is due to arrive January 4th and I will have her little plush doll to finish. Its dress will match the one for baby.

  9. carmen g says:

Pretty dang ingenious!!! Wow! I would’ve thrown in the towel…kudos!! As to making gifts? Yep…still at it. I’ve used Laura Carson’s mermaid collages to make several mermaid shrines (with your coffee break masonite shrines) and the vintage girls/bitchy words combo to make altoid tin magnets. Both are a big hit with friends!

  10. Jen R says:

  17. jean marmo says:

I love flying reindeer! We made something similar to this once. Now I am wondering where it is? Just today I though of two different kinds of ornaments I need to make. Two for my kids and 3 for my sisters. I am going to be busy!

  22. Abbee says:

Working on the last of my crafts. Everyone loves handmade personal ornaments. Use the round ornaments and mod podge images or scenes to the ball finish off with lace and hang a personalized tag. Sure to brighten someone’s smile.

  23. MaggieM says:

I used many AlphaStamp products to create cards, tags and ornaments this year…but I’m not finished yet! Most of my shopping is done, now on to wrapping, boxing and shipping-all this with snow and ice on the roads!

  24. Marilyn H says:

I didn’t hand-make any Christmas. I did a couple of tag ornaments for my company’s Christmas tree though.

  25. Christine V says:

I’m continuously amazed by the creativity that goes on here! Yes! I’m still making gifts: triptychs covered with papers, dresden, metalic braids, and other ephemera. Monograms in needlepoint that are being placed into Tim Holtz pocketwatches…I really doubt it will all get done on time!

  26. Patti G says:

    Love the reindeer. So pretty.

  27. Karen Mallory says:

Carolyn’s project is fabulous!! I am done with gift making. Still making a stocking for my grandson and working on ornaments!

  28. Dawn says:

I love the sleigh and reindeer that Caroline and her husband created. I am finished with all of my Christmas gifts, but may create some house shaped ornaments from one of last years Christmas collage sheets.

  29. Frieda Evaskis says:

I actually thought I was done with presents this year but I’m making some trinket boxes out of matchbooks (courtesy of your blog) with varying collage sheets and also modifying some cigar boxes with collage sheets as well for my two daughters. …and I do LOVE the reindeer!

  30. Denise Bryant says:

    Love those beautiful reindeer!
Not started yet on anything Christmas, except we have an artificial tree put up, Charlie Brown style! No lights or ornaments on it yet, although I may get a few ornaments hung yet! Kind of keeping a very low profile this year on the Christmas front, as my husband and I both lost our Moms in the last few months. 🙁

  31. Kate says:

I’m hosting 29 people for Christmas, just finished getting the house decorated, now I have all those Christmas tags yet to make…yikes!

  32. Margaret D says:

I am still making things. I have not gone shopping yet AT ALL! I have been making the little adorable Christmas ornaments that Nichola B posted at Pixie Hill and have discovered the wonders of Diamond Glaze. I will attach them to the card or gift for special people and I know they will love them. I don’t remember which Alpha Stamps collage sheets I used but the inserts are all Santas and Victorian children. They are quick and really sweet. I love the little pieces from Gypsy Soul laser cuts. I am pulling for Denise Bryant on this one. I lost my very dear uncle in October and Christmas is hard this year. I really hope Denise wins this. Merry Christmas to one and all!

  33. I’m so far behind I’m still working on Halloween but you’ve got great ideas.

  34. Rose says:

I have some projects done, but a lot of projects left to do. I’m a teacher, so I have been super busy with school obligations. Today is the last day of our semester, so starting tomorrow, I can dig in and become my own little Santa’s Workshop. I have everything (I hope) ready and waiting. A last minute idea would be mini books in a theme suitable for the recipient. Merry Christimas and thanks for the inspiration! I love all of the ideas!

  35. joan says:

As of yesterday I was working on more cards, and smaller projects.

  36. LeAnn says:

An idea for last minute ornaments is to take a clear flat ball ornament, cut a picture from a collage sheet to fit the back and glue it on. Then fill the ball about a fourth inch with colored mica.

  37. Luanne Shoup says:

Don’t forget to put the Reindeer food out on the porch.

  38. Laura callies says:

Oh my, i am still working on my final order for christmas presents that a friend ordered. Once i finish, over the next two days, i get to start on the gifts i am making for everyone. This is beyond a close one! I am using my christmas collage sheets to make altered boxes for my handmade bars of soap. The christmas sheets will be perfect to make a holiday box that can be used year after year with their other decorations. I will need my own team of elves to pull this off in time.

  39. Julie F. says:

This is gorgeous! I think I would love to make a Christmas Card holder with that sleigh and reindeer. I am a slo-poke, still addressing some cards—ugh!

  40. Rosemarie Grant says:

I need to make a gift by tomorrow and am going to look over the downloads to find coming I can incorporate into a room box. Since I already have a deer I’m looking for trees and snow etc. Thank you for your give aways.

  41. angelic says:

I still have a few gifts to make. The Christmas collage would make great Christmas ornaments, thanks for the chance to win.

  42. I love this, my little granddaughter LilyKate loves xmas and the reindeer, she would love to help with this project, I have such a Christmas lil’girl !

  43. Linda Marie says:

    Love it!!
