A Steampunk Time Machine by Laura Carson

Filed under Art Projects, Featured Artwork, Giveaways, Laura Carson, Newsletters, Steampunk, Tutorials

Design Team Member Laura Carson brings you Steamtown and a Time Machine Shadowbox (that’s made from a cigar box!) If you love steampunk, you’ll love Laura’s latest creation that is full of gears, gadgets and gizmos. You’ll also love that Laura created a coordinating Time Machine Collage Sheet and coordinating Digital Download Set (both New) if you’d like to spend some time making your own! Yeah, you know it, pun intended!

We have a 2-part Laura Carson project coming at you so I’m going to just point out a few things here that I happen to love about it; since you know I can’t possibly point out everything in the blog post!

Such as: the amazing astrolabe clock from Steamtown that is made from the Clockworks Laser-Cut Wood Embellishments, a Round Wooden Plaque and a Candlestick Holder. Of course there are other components as well, but those are the main ones and Laura walks you through how to construct it and directs you to one of her tutorials for that gorgeous patina on it as well.

Laura gave the two girls a Victorian version of a Segway that is a little on the mind-boggling side; and I’m thinking I’d like to have a real-life adult sized version of it for myself. From Laura’s tutorial:

“The frame of the bicycle is made from swirls that are part of the Clockworks Laser-Cut Wood Embellishments. I used the same rusting technique on the swirls as I used on the clock.

I painted a variety of pieces from the Steampunk Shapes Sets. Next, to the larger swirl, I started attaching the pieces I painted and at the top left, a bronze gear. I then added the smaller swirl to larger one to serve as the handle bars. I also added a game spinner and a furniture nail (with the pin removed).

Of course to find out how Laura completed the rest of her Victorian Segway you’ll have to see her tutorial. I know, I’m so rotten!

Moving on to my most favorite part: the Time Machine Shadowbox (see photos at left and below). I love altered cigar boxes – they’re the most versatile, most fun to make, with all the different shapes and depths that are available.

Innocent-looking enough, the beautiful Victorian facade from the Time Machine Digital Download Set provides the cover for the secret goings-on inside, whatever could those be? Laura tells you in her tutorial how to achieve the 3-D effects for the facade, and it’s really easy! Really – no joking.

Back to the secret goings-on… with a time machine! Oh, however could I have guessed that one? The time machine is quite stunning, made from the Time Machine Collage Sheet and Junkyard Findings – Pipe Parts. The cool thing about the pipe parts is that they’re flat back so they work nicely in shadow boxes, dioramas or as in this case, cigar boxes . The dinosaur popping his head out is a nice touch, but no worries. Miss Amelia and her handy-dandy umbrella have plans for him!

We have two supply lists, Steamtown and the Time Machine Shadowbox for you. Head on over to Artfully Musing for Laura’s tutorial and more pictures of the fantabulous Steamtown and Time Machine Shadowbox.
