Day of the Dead Shrines & Sale!

Filed under Art Projects, Halloween, Kristin Batsel, Lora Mahaffey

There are 5 beautiful new charms today with a Day of the Dead theme (actually big enough to be pendants), and they inspired me to put together a big group of related Sugar Skull items for a new sale! Three of the new charms are directly below… 2 more are shown down in the sale section. (Yes, these new items are in the new sale, too!)

I also picked out TWO Day of the Dead Shrine projects from the talanted ladies on the Design Team: each using a different structure as the base. AND I’ve put the supplies for BOTH of them in a new collection with all the goodies I just mentioned — and created a discount code for 20% off those suppiles! More info on the sale is below (and remember that all of the supplies mentioned ‘tween here and there are included in the sale)!

A Sugar Skull House for Halloween by Lora Mahaffey

Wow! I love this project! (And be still my heart: we’re getting closer to Halloween!) From those backlit eyes to the skull itself (and how it just fits in the house)… it makes me happy!

Here’s a bit from Lora’s blog post:

I know it’s only July, but I am all about Halloween lately, and most everybody knows how much I love doing houses, so here is a Sugar Skull in a house.

With bats.

And some scary tree bits.

And with glowing eyes.

I started out with the Mini House Room Box – 4×4 Open. I took away the attic floor to make room for the Sugar Skull #1.

Good tip!

I laid the skull on top of the large center piece and marked where I wanted to drill holes for my glowing eyes. [Note: see below for a photo of this step… and another good tip!]

Beside the few photos shown here, visit Lora’s blog post for lots of tips & more photos (including adding wires to the chipboard bats so they can fly)!

Here’s a link to the supply list. Note that Lora mixed up branches from both sizes of Creepy Trees (and remember all those items are on sale — see the bottom of this post for more info)

Five Matchbox Shrines by Kristin Batsel

Wow! ALL 5 shrines by Kristin Batsel are so beautiful and colorful! They all use the Matchbox Shrine Facade Set and 2 of them use the Loteria Matchbox Shrines Collage Sheet created for those facades.

Here’s an intro from Kristin herself:

I love the bright colors of Mexican folk art, and I love making little shrines, so these little matchbox shrine facades make me so happy. For the past week or two, I have been busy making shrines. All the bright colors! The fronts are chipboard, while the little niches are (actual) matchboxes. (I have so many extra matches now!)

The first shrine I did was all about Cosmopolitan martinis [see the bright pink one in the wide photo below] so I painted the exterior a bright pink with a red border. It’s embellished with polymer clay limes and pink leaves, and the niche features a miniature Cosmo (a tutorial for making the tiny Cosmo can be found on that page). The small metal Madonna is painted in Cosmo colors, and she’s offering up a slice of lime! This shrine will be the perfect addition to the Cosmo shelf in my kitchen.

Circling back to the large image above: this image of the Madonna is just so beautiful. It was the first thing I chose for this shrine. I then picked the paint colors to coordinate with the image. Gold Dresden trim works perfectly with this heavenly theme.

Great job, Kristin! Read more (and see more photos — and tips/info on each of the 5 shrines) in Kristin’s blog post and here’s her Supply List. NOTE: that’s the supply list for everything in all 5 shrines; If you want to narrow down by shrine:
Cosmo Time Shrine
Madonna Shrine
Bleeding Heart Shrine
Don’t Mess With The Devil Shrine
I See Corona Virus Shrine
