Paper Theatres

Ah… a subject near and dear to my heart. I’ve been collecting Victorian/Edwardian European prints for paper theatres since my costume designer days. And the 9 New Collage Sheets have barely scratched the surface… And all these collage sheets are designed to fit the Diorama Boxes.

The Design Team has done an amazing job making samples from the new sheets. The theatre at left is by Sarah Whitmire. And “The Red Queen” theatre at right is by Roc Nicholas. There are lots of samples posted on the Collage Sheet page, with links to the gallery where you can see what other components were used.

Paper Theatre Books

I’ve also tracked down a couple (new) books and a magazine about making paper theatres (one is by our Guest Designer Lisa Kettell!)

The first is Altered Art Circus (“Techniques for Journals, Paper Dolls, Art Cards, and Assemblages”). It includes easy tutorials on basic altering effects for new and vintage images, step-by-step instruction for projects, a gallery of inspirational work from other artists, and clip art and images to use in your own projects.

The second is Paper Puppet Palooza. What a fun book! Patterns, photos and detailed instructions for making moveable paper puppets (jumping jacks, shadow puppets, etc.). Even the wrap-around inside front and back covers have color artwork you can cut out to make puppets.

There’s also an issue of Somerset Workshop, which includes a wonderful little pug dog paper theatre (that could give you all kinds of ideas using the new Paper Theatre Collage Sheets), an altered tin metal how-to article, and all the articles have detailed photos and instructions.

Paper Theatre Embellishments

3 Die-Cut Chipboard Flourishes
Vine borders and 2 flourish designs, each die-cut from heavy chipboard. Each is photographed with a Large Diorama Box so you can see the scale.

Red/Gold Cording
Lightweight cording; nice & flexible for stitching or gluing around the edges of, say… a Paper Theatre. A bit under 1/4″.

Ball Chain Fringe
Pretty silly. But it might be just the thing you need to finish the top of a Paper Theatre. 1″ long loops, attached to a 3/4″ satin ribbon with brass studs.

New Rubber Stamps

D’Vine Clear Stamp Set
Pretty floral swirls with a broken, distressed (soft) look. A large set packaged with pre-punched, printed acetate (for storing in a 3-ring binder).

Superior Thread
From a vintage thread spool label. Approx. 1″ x 1″

Miscellaneous

Heart Lockets
Set of 3. Antique gold-tone metal. Includes 3 different designs (2 small; 1 large); all are working lockets.

Skull & Crossbones Charms
Antique- brass or -copper colored cast pewter. Set of 5.
