A Dark and Stormy Shrine! New Shrine Bases & New SALE!
Filed under Collage Sheets, Giveaways, Letters from the Sea Kit, Lora Mahaffey, Sale, Tutorials
Wow! This is so beautiful! Design Team Member Lora Mahaffey has crafted this piece using parts of a shrine kit, a window, and a Victorian shelf. (Luckily, she included a tutorial!)
And did I mention: it lights up! More info on that below. But first, here’s an intro from Lora’s blog post:
Here is a piece with some interesting elements… a stormy sea with a ship teetering on the brink of disaster.
A woman looking away from the ship, gazing into the ‘room’ with a sea serpent coiled around her ankles.
What is the story? Is she a transformed mermaid seeking vengeance on the sea captain who imprisons her?
Is she about to send the serpent to rescue the crew of the ship?
Whatever is happening, it’s going to be a rough, wet night.
Note: Lora hand-tinted that damsel, from the Edwardian Women Collage Sheet.
Special thanks to Lora as she also tinted the sea serpent (on her shrine and on the new Sea Serpents Collage Sheet — psst, it’s part of today’s Flash Sale on Mythology Collage Sheets).
See the wide photo below for a teaser from the tutorial: I love how Lora drilled a hole and just used the tea light upside-down (with the “flame” down into the hole). The large-ish base is hidden behind the shelf (in the finished piece). And as Lora says, “Very easy to turn on and change the battery!”
Here’s Lora’s supply list and blog post. But don’t forget to come back and see the new (related) shrine bases, collage sheet sale, and a Dark and Stormy Giveaway!

A Dark and Stormy Giveaway!
Ah… there’s a photo of the entire shrine, with the light on! And a close-up of that decorated Small Chipboard Victorian Wall Shelf (with a round image in the center from the Sea Green Mermaids Collage Sheet — inspired)! Plus a close-up of the sea serpent (with some extra pizzazz from Lime Green Stickles glitter.
So on to this Giveaway! To start things off I’ve picked out these goodies from Lora’s supply list:
– Arched Shrine Shadowbox
– Double Layer Window – Plain
– 1 Inch Tall White Vase
– Edwardian Women Collage Sheet
– Sea Serpents Collage Sheet – new
– Stormy Seas Collage Sheet – new
AND: a bonus! See that photo at left? It shows the size of the front facade from the Arched Shrine Shadowbox against the arched back of the new Stairstep Shrine Base Arched Back. Not that you’d use the facade there! I’m just showing that the size of the arch is large enough that you can decorate it and a bit of the back will show around the edges. I’m including one of these new arched bases in the Giveaway, too!
More about the new shrine base (one of two new shrine bases today): I wanted a slightly smaller base than the original Stairstep Shrine Base (which is on clearance sale, btw), that would still fit the Arched Shrine Shadowbox (if that shrine is sitting flush with the back of this base, now there’s just 1/2″ space on the front and about 3/8″ on each side of the shrine). And with the flush back, you can fit this on a shallow shelf (or hang on the wall).
To enter the A Dark and Stormy Giveaway drawing all you have to do is leave a comment BELOW on this blog post TODAY or TOMORROW (the deadline is 11:59 pm PST, Friday Night, February 22, 2019).

Hey, who won the Dance of the Mermaids Giveaway from Sunday’s newsletter? That would be Ellen Oliver Smith! Congrats! Check your email for info.
This is so elegant and beautiful, I would love to win.
This reminded me of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I love a dark ocean!
On the outside looking in the haunted mansion!
These shrine boxes have a ton of potential.
I love how Lora colored in the black and white photos. Great job on the Shrine!
I like the idea of making a shrine. So many different ways to use this
This one makes me think of Poe’s Annabelle Lee. I just love the dark atmosphere.
Love the shrine! So many possibilities
OK, how did I not know you had stairstep shrines? Anyway, I would do a scene looking out onto Venice …. maybe use a vintagey postcard for that or a painting, and I might put the woman in galoshes in case of acqua alta!
I love all kinds of weather, especially a “dark and stormy night.” This giveaway would also be a perfect start to a beautiful sunrise/sunset too!
Love these boxes, so many possibilities!
So inspiring and beautiful. So many possibilities for future projects.
I’d love to make a dia de los muertos shrine with these products! Beautiful pieces!
Oooo luv the new collage sheets
Absolutely stunning. I would like to double the view looking out and looking in. Double the fun and beauty.
Excellent. I would love to make my granddaughter a “positive attitude” shrine. She is working on positive affirmations, and as a teenager, she needs to know the joy of a sunset, clouds, and that the best of you can come out in the smallest of things.
A light up shrine is a great idea.
Love the shrine ideas!
What a beautiful shrine would love to win this. Thank you
I love her idea of how to bring light to the shrine. I never would have thought to do that!!! I love the tinting that she did on the lady and especially the sea serpent!
Great idea. The stormy seas background sets the mood.
This is gorgeous!!
Got to try the tealight trick, I have a bunch of them. I’d like to make a Hogwarts themed room.
I love everything about this!
What a great trick with the tea light!

I love the tea light detail! What a great idea!
Oh my oh my! Reminds me of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir….Just Fabulous, Lora
Going to peek out that window looking for Poseidon, the sea, horse and earthquakes! FUN!
Totally awesome! I would definitely be making a light up scene using G45’s Fairy Dust Collection. I have been waiting for the perfect base to use and I think this is the one! TFS!
such gorgeous art work!!
Beautiful giveaway. I love the light up shrine idea.
Love the sea serpents. What s great idea. I can almost hear the sea crashing over the rocks.
Love this!! I would probably save the shrine and base for either a Halloween or Christmas project but use the collage sheets for a book!
I love the little stories you made up to go with the shrine!
Very Pretty!
I love this! The light is so inspired! What an incredibly talented lady you are Lora
I see a Christmas tree in the window and lots of snow!
The addition of the tea light is wonderful! It’s really sent my creative juices flowing. Thank you, Lora.

Ok, I need more sea serpents in my life. This is so cool!
Love the combination of items to make this larger shrine!
So romantical!
These little boxes have all sorts of potential for every holiday or just for something in between the holidays. Imagination is the limit
It was a dark and stormy night and I would love to make a dark and stormy shrine. Actually snowed in and having cabin fever. 🙂
I’d love to make a dark and stormy shrine…this is my kind of stuff.

I feel a dark story coming on…love this project!
So beautifully done! After 6 1/2 hours of falling snow here in TUCSON, I need to get me some ocean; and dark and stormy fits the day!
