Becoming a Steampunk Mermaid – Steampunk 50% off!!
Filed under Art Projects, Beneath the Sea Kit, Giveaways, Newsletters, Rhonda Secrist Thomas, Sale, Steampunk
Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply list items from Rhonda’s project that are still available on the new site.
I was inspired by today’s Steampunk Mermaid artwork by Rhonda Secrist Thomas, so I’ve just put the ENTIRE Steampunk Collage Sheets section on sale for 50% off now through Monday night, July 11th!
30 collage sheets from goggles and latches and metal bits, to cabinet card portraits and men in their flying machines!
Design Team Member Rhonda Secrist Thomas started with the Beneath the Sea Kit and mixed it up with lots of steampunk elements to create a whole undersea world in her Becoming a Steampunk Mermaid!
To start off my summer, girls fresh out of school, my body decided to become sick for 2-1/2 weeks, like it’s never been sick before. [Sorry, Rhonda!] So I decided to go on a huge voyage, beneath the sea, to a place where Mermaids and Mermen live in both their native setting and in a huge steampunk community. I couldn’t believe I discovered such a place and I was in awe with the sites that I saw.
On one side, you can see the inside of the community’s walls. There are places to relax, gather with fellow fishy friends and a train station.
Every once in a while, you get the weird human that discovers this marvelous place. They just stare from outside like peeping Toms. Better not let the Mermaids catch you though. You won’t like what they do.
I love how Rhonda uses the Castle Album in multiple ways (she shows it laced together like an accordion book, and also set up like an actual castle with walls enclosing an inner space.
I also love how she merged images of Victorians with mermaid tails to add extra creatures to her scene.
Visit Rhonda’s blog post to learn how to make jewel-embellished windows with Glossy Accents (and see more lots more photos of her underwater realm)!
As Rhonda used an ocean’s-worth of goodies in her project, I had lots of choices for items to choose today’s Giveaway from (see below), here’s a good start on her Supply List (but even more are listed on her blog post).

Hey, who won Beach Cabanas Kit Giveaway? That would be Barb Striethorst! Congratulations!
Love this! I would merge some funky sea creatures and possible a fun steampunk cat!!
This kit is so gorgeous! I’ve recently been recovering from open heart surgery & this looks like so much fun! I’ve always loved the look of a mermaid & a seahorse combination, very pretty!
I LOVE THIS!! You took my two FAVORITE things (steampunk and mermaids) and merged them together! I would have picked steampunk and mermaids…… lol but since you already have done it…and did an AMAZING job might I add!! I will say either a witch~mermaid (great for Halloween) or a fairy~mermaid…complete with wings and all!! Those are a few more of my favorite things to create with! =0)
I’ll head to the sea shore with mine wee grandbebes to find MORE seashells to adorn our mer-lady-babies.
Love the kit. My daughter just had a baby and we had a Mermaid theme. This will do nicely to make a book.
Large land predators and merpeople merges sound intriguing. Then again, so do basic kitchen appliances.
Well, that would be a prince charming!
Love mermaids!
Seahorses, shells, starfish and waterplants……great Give-a-way !!!!!
I have a RL cat that would be a purrfect mermaid!
Great giveaway – seahorses and mermaids belong together!
I would merge a mermaid and a dragon! I’d love to see the dragon wings on a mermaid as she breathes fire on those who attempt to harm her. 🙂
I would merge a mermaid & a octopus or squid I think that would look awesome but I’d also have to add all of the steam punk gears & do dads to the mix !!!
Mermaids need pirates!
I’m a cat person, so I would have to merge a cat somehow.
The sea and steampunk, how fun is that!
I have heard stories of Mermaids that have wings and can take to the air if necessary! I think I would have to merge a fairy with the Mermaid tail and possibly even some gnomes and trolls! They live on the outskirts of Mermaid Land because they are so outnumbered by full Mermaids and Mermen! Their numbers are increasing rapidly though so they may soon try to takeover Mermaid Land! I told them to approach in a friendly manner and see if they would be accepted by the Mermaids before trying to start a war!

I love this wonderland! I have recently turned my 1/2 bath, which is downstairs and under my staircase into an “under the sea” theme, complete with mermaids, whales, beach glass and other treasures from under the sea. Creating this under the sea castle would be a nice addition to my new room. I think I would create a mermaid and merman family – adults and children, and perhaps a pet or two with tails! Muses for all!
Umf – that steampunk seahorse is amazing.
I would definitely try the cat/mermaid hybrid. But I think fairies and other wee folk would be fun, too….
Wow, my favorite combination, mermaids and steampunk! What a fun project. I would merge cats with mermaids. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love the idea of combining steampunk and mermaids! But, I would have to add fairy mermaids to my ocean scene. Fantastic giveaway, but since I’m impatient I have to hit the shop for some of these wonderful items now:)
I would merge steampunk sea horse and a steampunk octopus love both
Mermaids and mercats!
So cool! I would add some dog mermaids. Why not – everyone else wants cats:)
Pirates of course!
I would merge with a dragon!!! Seeing the beautiful dragon tail on the mermaid and her breathing fire would be awesome to make! Not to mention using my gear stamp embossed with rainbow mix of pearl embossing powders and watercolor mix on the paper.
I also love the idea of mercats.
I like mermaids just the way they are, but I think some beautiful fin-like wings would be a nice addition so merging with a fairy is a possibility. I think she would love to have a bottle with a note in it as an accessory, and perhaps a starfish necklace.
Love barb’s idea of a winged mermaid! Or Jellyfish Ladies? (Top half lady, bottom half jellyfish.) Perhaps merpuppies for the mermaids to ‘walk’? I gotta say a merpug or a merpoodle would be hilarious.
Oh wow. Steampunk, mermen, castles….looks like a lot of fun for the imagination! Thanks for the chance to win!
Just like everyone else, dogs and cats would be my choice. What I really think would be fun is to mix skellies, witches, goblins, pumpkins, anything Halloween with mermaid tails.. A haunted underwater scene would be amazing!
I’d merge a seahorse with a mermaid.
I love Steampunk and I love mermaids I would merge them with a beach scene
This give-a-way absolutely twitter-pates my creativity. I would be one happy mermaid to be able to work on this castle journal…oh the places we will go…
Love this! Would merge mermaid and a lab, best dogs in the world!
First thing that popped into my head was an angel or fairy merged with mermaid, with gossamer wings. That way a flying fish person would be born. The idea of steampunk is cool.
Love. That album! Mermaids are so much fun! I would definitely do an under the sea album. And I love steampunk!
First thought? I’d figure out how to make a MerDarling, ;cause that’s my husband’s pet name for me! I guess she’d have to be at least part cat…but have sparrow wings…and probably antlers of some sort…!
Awesome giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win! I think it’d be cute to merge a mermaid and a seahorse!
Michelle
I was thinking I’d merge a cat with a mermaid, because the undersea world could use some catitude!
I’m thinking that merging cats and dogs with a mermaid would make interesting images.
I would merge puppies with a mermaid!
I love this giveaway. My granddaughter just adopted two new kittens so I would use a cat theme to make something for he.
Wonderful giveaway! I would like to see cats with a mermaid tail!!
I’d merge a mermaid with a water dragon!
A griffen with a wonderful, iridescent mermaid tail…lovely!
I would merge with what has probably been used before and I think would be lovely: a seahorse or an octopus.
A Beagle of course. imagine all the interesting stuff she could explore on the ocean floor.
Merge with an Eagle, Could fly and swim.
I’d merge a mermaid with a butterfly!
I’d like to use a monkey and make a sea monkey, perhaps some other circus animals as fish or mermaids too. An under the sea circus.
Some of this would be steampunk/mermaid and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea book displays. Thank you for another opportunity!
Beautiful projects!
I’d merge a seahorse and a mermaid!
All of the ideas are great . I think an undersea world of vintage , silent movie stars sans fins would be fun
Definitely add steampunk fish, seahorse, mermaids, sea monsters and try to make a steampunk submarine, like Jules Verne.
I’m not too sure about mixing up a mermaid with another creature, but I sure like this giveaway.
A mer_pup. Yes a puppy mermaid. Has to have a super cute face and floppy ears.
For true staempunkery you need to combine Victorians and octopuses. Seahorse style mermaids would be great. And of course, clownfish could have an entirely different meaning…
A cat. Merchant😸
How about owl and mermaid?
I would pair the mermaid with Capt. Jack Sparrow. Wouldn’t they make a beautiful pair?
I’d pair the mermaid with a beautiful dog.
Great set…love Steampunk!
So yummy! I would dearly love to win this Giveaway.
I really like the steampunk lady and mermaid combo!
Another great kit! Love it! And lived the monthly it!
Sea horses and mermaids! Gotta love it!
