More mermaids! Seems to be the theme this month, even though the idea for Design Team Member Laura Carson’s Mermaid Dressing Table was hatched quite some time earlier.

Laura used the Gothic Mirror With Drawer as the base of her dressing table. And as you can see, it’s been gussied up into a glittery vanity for a mermaid (and Laura has shown step-by-step photos of how she added layers and colors in her blog post).

I wanted to do something unexpected so I thought it would be fun to come up with a dressing table that a mermaid might have. I imagined the table decorated with treasures from the sea. The mirror needed a base with legs and what has legs in the sea; an octopus (something I just learned). The back two tentacles are used as legs to walk on the ocean floor.

The iridescent patina is created by using Prima’s new Metallique & Opal Magic waxes.

For the table, I created mermaid versions of what you might find on a dressing table; crown, hand mirror, jewel box and a portrait of her partner.

Skipping down to how Laura layered elements and colors for the mirror frame (and see the wide photo below for 3 photos during the process):

I traced the outside and inside dimensions of the mirror on a piece of paper. The purpose for doing this is to make sure that I don’t add any embellishments that make it impossible to attach the mirror to the mirror supports.

Next, I started laying out some of the large pieces (coral chipboard and brass mermaid) around the mirror.

I painted the chipboard coral using various colors of Liquid Pearls paint and glued them to the mirror frame. I also attached the mermaid to the top of the frame.

NOTE: I filled the bottom part of the back of the mermaid’s tail with Glossy Accents until the glue was flush with the brass. This gave me a large surface with which to attach the mermaid to the frame.

See more of the tutorial (including making a clay octopus stand for the dressing table) in Laura’s blog post. And check out the new mermaid-y colored items on your way down to the bottom of this post (to enter a Giveaway with lots of the items in Laura’s supply list).

Oh dear! This is delightful and beautiful! I love how she has transformed the brass mermaid! Gorgeous! I would love to make a vanity like this! I can see lots of bottles and jars of mermaid lotions and potions, hair care products and even a few extra shell tops that she was trying on and tossed over the top of the vanity in her rush to get ready for her merman to take her on a date! Fingers crossed 🤞! TFS!
