Freak Show by Kristin Batsel & New Starry FREE Gift!

Filed under Art Projects, Back in Stock, Collage Sheets, Giveaways, Kristin Batsel, Newsletters, Tim Holtz

Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply list items from Kristin’s project that are still available on the new site.

NEW Stars, Dots & Stripes FREE Gift Kit! Have you notice Design Team Member Kristin Batsel’s fondness for bold patterns (stripes, stars, polka dots)? I’ve noticed, too (and they are used to such good effect in today’s Freak Show artwork, that I started wandering around searching for similar patterns). And did I find some!

These kits are FREE for ALL orders, now through SATURDAY night, August 27th, 2016 (or until the kits are gone)! AND (bonus!) I've just put all of the items in the gift kit on 50% off sale!

Kristin has created a Freak Show sideshow tent from the new Split Front Box. I love this new display box design! The 2 halves of the outer box can be completely removed (or opened farther than in my photos). Approx. 4-1/4″ tall x 5-1/2″ wide x 3″ deep when closed.

Kristin’s post includes lots of good tips, like planning the space (so the performers awaiting their turn inside can be seen, even though some of the shorter ones are in the back of the queue). Plus Kristin added a circus tent to the top of the box, and she shows how she created it (with diagrams and measurements) in case you would like to add a tent to yours, too.

The outside is bright and cheery, full of colorful stripes, polka dots, flags, posters, and curtains. But inside is a different story… The freaks gather and wait to be displayed in the center box, while the split doors make the perfect viewing place for the individual performers to sit as the curious crowds walk by. I did not attach the doors to the box, so they can be pulled forward as shown.

I created a new Vintage Sideshow Posters Collage Sheet (with colorful Victorian posters), and along with it and the monotone images from past sideshow collage sheets (colored by Kristin with Copic markers) she had lots of performers to choose from. See everything Kristin used to create her Freak Show in her Supply List.

I think I would make a three room display out of the split room box! I would do a kitchen in the center with living room/den on one side and either a laundry room or bathroom on the other side. Breakfast cooking, tv on and getting ready for the day to come! TFS!

The freak show is amazing! I’ve been collecting Halloween and circus stuff! What better way to combine the two?!

  49. Lou Conaway says:

I’d make a garden, a lovely one. It would be so fine to have the box with that wonderful tent. Between us, I’m a one legged woman who can’t wear a prosthetic and uses a power chair. That makes me a rolling freak show to people now and then. Making a freak show is really beyond me at this stage in life. I guess I could get an artist friend to draw and paint me in my chair, jeans cuffed below my stump. Then we could put in people sneaking a peak or openly starring, or my fave, the woman who puts her hand beside her child’s face to hide the horror. We could make new signs with them as the freaks and me as the observer.
