Newsletter: Embossed Foil Boxes + Halloween

Wow. So much eye candy today! From Gypsy to Steampunk to Halloween in theme. And two tutorials plus highlights from Thursday’s newsletter — including the Gypsy Fever Blog Hop! drawing for over $100 in art supplies that ends tonight! I’m going to dive into one of the tutorials first…
Gypsy Caravan Wheels
I received lots of queries about adding wheels to the Concertina Chipboard Pennants for the Gypsy Fortune Teller Swap. So I played around and found some items that work well together (and, most importantly, don’t involve glue — important if you’re participating in the swap and want your pieces to travel cross-country twice and stay together).
Note: wheels are not required for the swap. But there are some cute samples by the Design Team, like the one at far right by Rhea Freitag, that do use wheels. More photos of Rhea’s project are in the Gallery.
The photo at right is showing just one of the solutions I came up with, using the new 47mm Antique Gold Filigree.
Guest Designer Marilyn Hughes
We first discovered Marilyn Hughes when she entered our Think Pink Art Challenge on our Facebook page awhile back. Marilyn ended up being the winner with the most likes for her adorable shrine!
Hi! I’m Marilyn Hughes. I live and play in south Louisiana, and up until about three years ago was a die-hard miniaturist and miniature doll costumer. Then one day I stumbled onto an ATC swap site and that was all it took. I was totally hooked on altered & mixed-media art!
I first started with ATCs, progressed to tags, followed by inchies, dabbled with tins, then finally got into altering anything I could get my hands on (right now I’m hooked on shrines). Currently, I’m only able to work my magic on weekends since I hold down a full-time job as well as being a full-time Mom and wife.
Embossed Foil Box Tutorial
This post has two wonderful ideas for transforming a simple white chipboard box into an embossed-foil beauty that has the look of hammered metal. Design Team Member Rhea Freitag has posted her own tutorial for the gorgeous steampunk-inpired box at right (shown housing some of her 4×4 Coasters from the recent Birds in Hats Swap).
But since not everyone has an embossing machine, I asked Wendy Anderson to come up with a low-tech variation (a Halloween variation). Wendy chose to glue brass charms and chipboard cut-outs on the box and (only!) used heavy-duty kitchen foil, white glue, and black acrylic paint.
